What a difference a pair of golf shoes and golf attire can make. Seven-year-old Whitney Banz dressed the part Monday in the Lynn Summerhays -- Salt Lake City Junior and continued the family tradition of placing in the medal division in the 10 and Under Girls Division.
Banz decided just a week ago that it was time she carried on the family tradition of playing golf in the Utah Junior Golf Assn. It was such a spur-of-the moment decision that the youngest Banz golfer came dressed in sandals and regular clothes.
After that first outing, she decided she needed to dress the part of a golfer. She came to her second tournament being played at the Jordan River Par 3 dressed in golfing shoes and clothes more fitting a real golfer.
It must have done the trick. Banz concluded her second round tied for first with a round of 45 and went into her first sudden death playoff. She won the playoff and joined her brothers -- Austin and Hayden -- in earning a medallion in one of this year's tournaments.
While Banz was celebrating her first win, Max Brenchley in the 9-10 Division celebrated his sixth first-place win. Brenchley has dominated the 9-10 division. Brenchley has finished first in each tournament he has entered this season. Among his wins was the first in which he qualified to play in the national Junior World tournament in July.
