Willey Wins Utah County Jr. With Eagle
McCoy Willey chipped in for eagle in sudden death playoff to capture the Utah County Junior championship in the Johnny Miller division.
Willey, who will be a Dixie High School sophomore, was 58 yards out from the green in the first hole of sudden death playoff with Sandy's Blake Peterson.
"When I hit it, I knew it would be close," said Willey. "But, I never thought it would be in."
Willey was leading the two-day tournament by two after the first day's play at Hobble Creek Golf Course. He said he felt he had a good chance of winning if he could hit even during the second day at Cascade Golf Center.
But that strategy was sorely tested when he began playing the tough Cascade course. He said he spent most of the days in weeds.
"I didn't hit the ball well and I didn't putt well," he said.
But, he said, he scrambled well to maintain the first place spot.

Braxton Barber Scores Rare Double Eagle
While weeds repeatedly gobbled up ball after ball of the junior players in the second round of play of the UJGA Utah County Junior, Braxton Barber found his ball was gobbled up by something entirely unexpected -- the hole. It was a find that placed the 15-year-old in the elite double eagle club.
Braxton, who will be a sophomore at Lone Peak High School, scored his double eagle on the second hardest hole at the Orem Golf course.
He said he drove his ball to within 180 yards of 521-yard severe dogleg par 5 hole. He pulled out a 5-iron, hit towards the green, but couldn't immediately see his ball when he and his fellow competitors walked up to the hole. He thought it must be in the weeds, which had been home to many golf balls throughout the day of play.
As the rest of the group gathered on the green to hit their own putts, they soon discovered Barber's ball resting in the hole.
